PORTFOLIO

I'm Ben, a Digital Media Design graduate working in the Plymouth area. I have a strong passion for design, and creating digital media.

My main skills include web design, creative coding, game design and immersive dome production.

The following pieces of work are from my time at university and some external projects I have completed over the past number of years.

My Work.

“Architecture”

“Architecture” is an immersive first-person video game experience based on the practices of an architect.

The user has to take on different levels in order to find the architects sketchbook hidden in each one.

The project was created purely within Unreal Engine and Blender in which I created my own 3D models to add to the scene.

This project was my final year piece in the third year of my degree at the University of Plymouth.

“Sonic Racing Trials”

“Immersive Relaxation Garden”

“Sonic Racing Trials” is a project made by myself and my classmate during year 2 of our university studies.

A first-person driving game in which the user has to navigate through a range of obstacles whilst working against the clock.

This project was made within Unreal Engine, 3DS Max and Blender.

My main roles in this project were 3D modelling and creating the level layout. In addition, I also worked extensively on the HUD layout, creating menu screens and start/end screens.

Throughout my time at university and further, I have created a range of 3D models to fit different projects and aesthetics. Here are a few examples of some different models I have produced over the past few years.

The “immersive Relaxation Garden” is a dome-based project created within Unreal Engine with models made in Blender.

This piece is built for a 360 degree dome viewing experience and was showcased to my fellow University student group in a small exhibition.

This project was built with a purpose to provide a meditative experience to sooth stressful moments.

3D Modelling

Ben Slaughter portfolio website

This piece is an ongoing project in which I am coding a fully functional portfolio website, featuring a range of design projects.

This project has gone through multiple iterations to get to the stage shown below and prototyping has allowed me to explore different formats and aesthetics.

The site is being coded within Visual Studio code with a primary focus on CSS and HTML with aspects of JS being brought in to create a more interactive feel.

I aim for this website to be live within the coming months and to feature animation and aspects such as a personalised logo.

Magic 8 Cube

The “Magic 8 Cube” is a physical media project created by my colleague and I during our second year of Digital Media Design study.

This interactive experience was created with extensive Arduino code and motion sensors to create a playful take on the illusive “magic 8 ball”.

The piece was presented in a small-scale interactive exhibition in which a group of students tested the project and we received great feedback on its playability.

ES Studios prototype landing page

This project is a prototype piece which I put together after finishing my degree to further my web design skills.

The project is the beginning to a full scale website being created for my sister to promote her film studies with an effective and stylish website.

This work is an ongoing project and has been coded within Visual Studio code primarily in CSS and HTML languages with hints of Javascript.

Use of animation and logo design will help to elevate this project and is something I will add once this piece takes shape.

Inked Expressions

“Inked Expressions” is a project that showcases my first experience with website creation.

This prototype includes a fully functional tattoo generator game which presents the user with a tattoo design upon the click of a button.

The work was created within Visual Studio Code and p5.js web editor and was showcased at the 2023 “Immersive Horizons” exhibition at the Devonport Market Hall, Plymouth as shown in the below video.

LHC Design work experience

During year 10 at Secondary school I undertook a week-long work experience at LHC Design’s Plymouth branch.

This was an extremely valuable experience and one which inspired me to pursue a career in design.

I was tasked with creating and modelling an urbanised area centred around a cafe within a small town to bring a commercial yet environmentally friendly development to the town.

Working on this project brought me so many new creative skills and introduced me to programs such as sketch-up.

In addition to learning new creative programs, this work experience introduced me to creative processes such as ideation and prototyping along with working to an industry brief.

After completing this project I was awarded the “Inette Austin-Smith work experience award for my piece and was presented with the award by the RIBA.

Revive Plymouth

“Revive Plymouth” is a collaborative project undertaken during my second year of studies at University of Plymouth.

During this project me and the team were tasked with creating a theoretical proposal for an eco-friendly advertising solution.

This project was presented to a board of creatives and lecturers who assessed the effectiveness of our business plan in an industry setting.

During this process, there were a range of factors we had to address including accessibility, cost and digital integration.

Our idea was to integrate “digibikes” into Plymouth by pairing up with “Plymouth Culture” and “Beryl” to digitally advertise on the wheels of bikes.

Future Goals

Day ‘n Nite

“Day ‘n Nite” is a small scale artistic coding project which was created in my first year of university study.

This piece was my first attempt at creative coding and one which was presented to my fellow course mates and a panel of lecturers in a mini-exhibition.

The project was made purely in P5.JS web editor focusing on Javascript code.

My future goals in design not only consist of creating industry standard user centred projects, but also raising a conversation about the future of design and the direction of the industry.

I am passionate about exploring the influence of AI on the design industry and how it can be detrimental to the relationship between a designer and their clients.

This is something I wish to delve into in more detail, raising a case study of the negative impacts of AI on the creative industry and its limitations to creativity and oppression of freelance creatives.

I wish to explore the connections humans have to imagination and creativity and how this is a vital part of communication in the world today, which is something AI can’t provide.

In addition, I am very committed to centering my designing around providing an accessible and captivating experience.
